lug 24, 2018
Silvio Barnabà is to be the new head trainer of Openjobmetis Varese Basketball. Born in Canosa di Puglia on May 16, 1971, Barnabà has signed a contract that will bind him to the Red & Whites club until the end of the 2018/19 season. A highly experienced professional, Barnabà has many years of experience that has seen him as leader in his field in Serie A and with various national teams, as well as in the area of swimming.
«Being able to work for Varese Basketball is a source of great pride -says Silvio Barnabà-. The Red & Whites club is a mirror of the history of basketball in Italy and in Europe. Whoever works in this area dreams one day of being able to work with this marvellous company. Right now, my goal is to be able to repay the trust that the club and the technical staff have had in me. I hope to be able to contribute so that things go a smoothly as possible. When I came to Masnago as an adversary, I could not help but be fascinated by the fans and the history that was emblazened on the banners hanging in the sports hall that celebrate Varese’s many victories in Italy and in Europe. I have to be honest – I can’t wait to wear a jersey with the Varese Basketball emblem».
After graduating in physical sciences from the University of Foggia in 2003 where he also obtained a specialisation in the science and techniques of high-level sport, Barnabà went on to gain a lot of experience in Italian sport, especially in the world of basketball. He worked on physical training, and for an extended period of time in the national teams sector, with the first team in 2010, and the Under 20s team from 2010 to 2017. He also worked with the Under 18s team (2004/05 and 2008/09) and the Under 16s in 2006/07. With the Under 20s he won a gold at the European Championship in 2013 and a silver at the 2011 European Championship. With the Under 18s he won a bronze medal at the European Championship in 2005.
While working with the National teams, Barnabà was also extensively involved in the Italian championship, first with Napoli (2007/08) and subsequently with Avellino (2010/18). With the Irpino club he got into the final of the 2018FIBA Europe Cup, the final of the Italian Cup 2016, the quarterfinals in the playoffs of this year's championship and the semi-final in 2017. In addition to basketball, the new Openjobmetis Varese basketball head trainer has also successfully worked in the area of swiming, working with South African champion Chad Le Clos' who, becasue of the work of the trainer from Puglia, won the gold in the 200 butterfly at the 2017 World Championship in Budapest, as well as three golds, a silver and a bronze in the Commonwealth games this year.
