GENEVA, THE LEGENDARY RAGA IN THE FIBA HALL OF FAME
Another legendary Varese Basketball player has been honoured in the FIBA Hall of Fame. Mexican Manuel Raga was the star of the ceremony as an inductee in the pantheon of the world basketball champions on Saturday August 27, 2016 in the House of Basketball in Mies (Geneva). This is in recognition for the forward who arrived at Varese at the beginning of the seventies and took part as the main player in the epic establishment of the Gialloblù Avalanche. Manuel won three league titles wearing the Ignis jersey – (1968/69, 1969/70, 1970/71), three Italian Cups (1968/69, 1969/70, 1970/71), three European Cups (1969/70, 1971 / 72, 1972/73) and two InterContinentals (1970, 1973). Manuel, who celebrated his 72nd birthday last March, was honoured in Geneva during this historic event, which was also attended by Antonio Bulgheroni, Varese Basketball counsellor, who represented the Piazza Monte Grappa club on this special day for the club. Raga, who was nicknamed ‘the helicopter’ for his ability to remain suspended in the air, thus becomes part of a small circle of champions who have become part of the history of European and world basketball. Today, Manuel teaches basketball to young people in his country in order to cultivate new generations of Mexican players and find new talent to take to the nationals.
