VARESE SPORTS AWARD – SECOND PLACE GOES TO GIANCARLO FERRERO
May 08, 2017
An evening of sport and charity was centre stage on Monday 8 May in Villa Napoleonica in Ville Ponti, Varese. As part of the sixth instalment of the Varese Sports Award, a regular end-of-season event organised by Sunrise Media, Giancarlo Ferrero, captain of Openjobmetis Varese Basketball, was ranked second in the category ‘Athlete of the Year’ behind Federica Stufi, the Unet Yamamay Busto Arsizio volleyball player.
At the beginning of the evening, silhouettes of Openjobmetis Varese Basketball players were put up for auction on eBay for charity. This was an idea generated by the ‘We Are Basketball’ trust, Sunrise Media and Varese Basketball, and supported by Openjobmetis and Tigros, and the many donations by fans to assist the Giacomo Ascoli Foundation. This organisation has been providing support for children affected by oncohematological pathologies and scientific research for the study and treatment of paediatric lymphomas since 2006. This benevolent initiative has raised €1,000 for a just cause.
