OVIDIJUS VARANAUSKAS JOINS THE WHITE-AND-RED TEAM

Pallacanestro Openjobmetis Varese has found an agreement with Ovidijus Varanauskas. Born in 1991, Varanauskas signed a one-year contract to play with the white-and-red club until the end of the 2015/2016 sport season. An excellent one-on-one player with outstanding athletic and technical skills, Varanuskas is also a very good passer. Skillful in pick and roll, the Lithuanian player is also a good defender who consistently puts great pressure on the opposing attackers.

Grown with Lietuvos Rytas, he took his first steps as a professional player in his home town, making his debut in the championship and in the Baltic League with Sakalai Vilnius. After participating in all national youth selections and winning a bronze medal in the 2007 Under 16 European Championship, he joined Statyba Vilnius in the NKL. With this team, he reached the finals, showing his talents and drawing the attention of foreign clubs. In the 2013/2014 season, he left his home country for the first time to play a season in Poland with Polpharma Starogard Gdanski. In the past season, he returned to LKL and played both in the national championship and in the Baltic League, first with Tonybet Prienu (averaging 14.8 points, 3.1 rebounds and 4.9 assists) and closing the season with Juventus-LKSK Utenos.
Varanauskas is a star in the 3x3 basketball FIBA discipline. Currently he is 25th in the world players’ ranking and number 1 in Lithuania for this discipline. In 2015, he represented the National Team at the Baku European Games, while in 2014, he ranked third in the European Championship and 4th in the World Championship. At the end of August, he won the Lausanne World Tour with the Vilnius team, which automatically entitled him to participate in the Abu Dhabi world finals.
